KwaZulu was a tribal homeland in the eastern region of [[South Africa|Republic of South Africa]] from 1977 until 1994.<ref> The African Homeland, or ''bantustan,'' was a territory specifically set aside for black Africans of a specific ethnic or tribal group during the apartheid era.</ref> The region was set aside for Zulu-speaking people, where Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi was its traditional leader as well as head of the Inkatha Freedom Party. KwaZulu was reincorporated into South Africa on 27 April 1994, merging with the old province of Natal to become the new KwaZulu-Natal province.

== KwaZulu Camouflage ==

* The KwaZulu Police utilized a camouflage pattern based on the "grasslands" design of the South African Police (SAP), but incorporating grass green and orange foliage shapes on a grey background.

One possibility is that this was the 1st design utilized by the KwaZulu Police, later replaced by the above "grey" SAP-style variant. Another is that the pattern was scheduled to replace the grey pattern, but was never fully-implemented due to regime changes in South Africa and subsequent re-integration of the Homelands. The final possibility is that uniforms in this pattern were created either for a special unit of the Kwazulu Police, or a paramilitary unit, in order to set them apart from the conventional police personnel. Whatever the case, the evidence is quite solid that articles produced in this camouflage pattern were in fact intended for the Kwa Zulu Homeland, and not for Transkei (which was a rumor that floated around the collecting community for many years, but has no foundation whatsoever).
